The Science of "Not-Doing"

Hello everyone. I hope you are having a lovely vacation. I hope that you find time to read this among all the other classic new year resolution posts.

If any of you have ever read John Green’s An Abundance of Katherines,  then you've read the passage where Hassan and Colin had been talking about the work Hollis had been doing for the factory and Hassan talks about the idea of being a “not doer”. For those of you who haven’t read it, it’s the idea of being a person who doesn't do anything that is necessarily bad- such as purposefully tripping someone or lying- but he or she hasn't really done anything particularly good either- like donating time or money to charity.
In my opinion, I’m a lot like Hassan. I’d much rather watch an episode of Merlin over a bowl of ice cream than study for a test, or do much of anything. It’s not like I do anything particularly bad, I just haven’t done any good.
So in honor of this being the beginning of a new year, I've decided to make this my resolution. I want to do something this year, I want to make an impact.
This is also my challenge to every one of you. Go out and touch someone’s life. Shovel the sidewalk for your elderly neighbor. Donate some spare change to a charity of your choice. Take out the trash without being asked. I mean, you could even just smile and say thank you.

So maybe you end up taking this advice. Maybe you don’t. This isn't some type of overbearing higher law that you have to follow just because some kid on the internet told you to. But I do truly think it would be an amazing idea, and maybe pump a bit more kindness into the world.
